Mentoring Matters Induction Leader(s) Roles and Responsibilities
Principal and/or Assistant Principal Designee Roles and Responsibilities
Ensure that:
- Work collaboratively with the Primary/Secondary Site Induction Leaders
- Accept assistance, support, and suggestions in order to enhance effectiveness as a classroom teacher.
- Attend monthly/bimonthly Mentoring Matters meetings
- Attend and participate in mandatory professional development opportunities
- Complete Mentoring Matters action steps and utilize them to improve classroom instruction
Mentoring Matters Induction Leader(s) Roles and Responsibilities
- Plan for and facilitate meetings Mentoring Matters participants at the assigned school sites.
- Provide any relevant materials that will support the goals and objectives of the Mentoring Matters program.
- Serve as a coach, mentor, and professional development specialist for the Mentoring Matters participants.
- Communicate with participants in at least two formats (email, fax, flyer, etc.) prior to meetings. Please include the meeting location, time, and agenda.
- Submit documentation in a timely manner
- Complete an end of the year reflection on the success/next steps of your school based Induction Program.

Ensure that:
- The Mentoring Matters- New Teacher Induction Program will be implemented with fidelity according to the guidelines and plans set forth.
- The Mentor Teacher reflects the qualities of an effective mentor.
- The following reflective questions can assist in the selection of the Mentoring Matters Mentor Teacher:
- Character
- Is the Induction leader eager to share information and ideas with colleagues?
- Are they flexible, persistent, resilient and open-minded?
- Is the Induction leader willing to participate in training to improve her mentoring skills?
- Professional Competence and Experience
- Does the potential mentor have expert knowledge of pedagogy and subject matter?
- Do they demonstrate excellent classroom management skills?
- Does he or she collaborate well with other teachers and administrators?
- Does the potential mentor possess efficient technology competencies?
- Communication Skills
- Does the Induction leader listen attentively?
- Does the potential mentor ask questions that prompt reflection and understanding?
- Is s/he efficient with the use of time?
- Does s/he offer critiques in positive and productive ways?
- Does s/he convey passion and enthusiasm for teaching?
- Is s/he discreet and able to maintain confidentiality?
- Interpersonal Skills
- Is the potential mentor able to maintain a trusting professional relationship?
- Does s/he know how to demonstrate care for a new teacher’s professional and emotional needs?
- Is s/he approachable?

- The following reflective questions can assist in the selection of the Mentoring Matters Mentor Teacher:
- The Mentor Teacher will coordinate all of the required and optional activities in the Mentoring Matters- New Teacher Induction Program. (The Secondary will assist if applicable.)
